Senior Applied AI Manager

Oumi is on a mission to make frontier AI truly open for all. The company provides an end-to-end, AI-native platform to build custom AI models in hours, not months, automating the loop of evaluation, data synthesis, training, and repeat.

Responsibilities

• Define and drive the research and engineering roadmap for AI science
• Recruit, manage, and develop a high-performing team of ML engineers and applied researchers
• Lead experimentation across the full training stack including pre-training, SFT, alignment (RLHF, DPO, GRPO), and distillation
• Own data strategy, including quality scoring, filtering, and synthetic data generation
• Design evaluation frameworks and automated feedback loops to inform training decisions
• Research and develop agent-based systems to orchestrate the model training lifecycle
• Partner with infrastructure and product teams to ensure reliable production deployment
• Contribute to open-source tooling and represent Oumi in the research community

Requirements

• 5+ years of professional experience in ML research or ML engineering
• 1+ years of experience managing engineers or applied researchers
• Expertise in the model training lifecycle (pre-training, fine-tuning, evaluation, and deployment)
• Hands-on experience training or improving LLMs or VLMs
• Experience with LLM-powered automation, tool-use patterns, or multi-agent architectures
• PhD in AI or equivalent industry experience

Preferred Qualifications

• Ph.D. in Computer Science, Machine Learning, or a related field
• Publications in ML/AI venues such as NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, or ACL
• Experience with data-centric ML approaches like curriculum learning or synthetic data generation
• Contributions to open-source ML frameworks
• Familiarity with ML infrastructure including Kubernetes and GPU clusters
• Prior experience at an early-stage or high-growth startup
