Scientist II, mRNA Research & Production

Responsibilities

• Lead and execute end-to-end research-grade automated mRNA production workflows including template preparation, IVT, capping, and purification
• Design mRNA sequences to improve protein yield, activity, and specificity
• Manage and mentor a small mRNA production core function, coordinating schedules and training team members
• Partner with payload engineering, delivery, and pharmacology teams to ensure materials are fit-for-purpose
• Improve IVT and purification workflows to increase yield and minimize impurities like dsRNA and endotoxins
• Implement and interpret mRNA analytical assays using platforms like HPLC, qPCR, and capillary electrophoresis
• Maintain clear SOPs, batch records, and production documentation

Requirements

• PhD with 2-3 years of relevant experience, MS with 10+ years, or BS with 12+ years of relevant experience
• Deep hands-on experience with IVT-based mRNA production and characterization
• Expertise in plasmid DNA template preparation, linearization, and mRNA purification
• Strong understanding of mRNA quality attributes and process-related impurities
• Experience producing mRNA for discovery-stage screening and scaling for in vivo preclinical studies
• Experience coordinating, training, or managing technical team members
• Proficiency with preparative chromatography, TFF, or bead-based purification
• Strong technical judgment and ability to troubleshoot production workflows

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with genome editing, base editing, or mRNA/LNP therapeutics
• Experience with automation-compatible workflows, liquid handlers, or LIMS
• Familiarity with LNP formulation interfaces and RNA buffer compatibility
• Familiarity with GMP readiness and CMC planning for RNA therapeutics
