About the role
Responsibilities
- Operate, calibrate, and maintain low-temperature scanning NV magnetometry systems, including high-vacuum, cryogenic cooling, and laser alignment.
- Manage high vacuum systems and cryogenic cooling equipment, ensuring safe handling of materials and maintaining stable environments.
- Operate and maintain scanning probe equipment (AFM/STM) and confocal microscopes for nanometer-scale imaging.
- Provide technical support and operation for X-ray diffraction (XRD) and vibrating-sample magnetometer (VSM) systems.
- Troubleshoot and repair electronic components and scientific instrumentation.
- Assist faculty and students in designing and executing experiments for quantum sensing and materials science research.
- Provide training to students, postdocs, and researchers on the use of laboratory instrumentation.
- Maintain detailed documentation of equipment maintenance, calibrations, and experimental procedures.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Physics, Engineering, Materials Science, or a related technical field.
- Demonstrated experience with scanning probe systems (e.g., AFM).
- Experience working with cryogenic systems and high vacuum systems.
- Hands-on experience with electronics troubleshooting and instrumentation repair.
- Familiarity with XRD and VSM.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and perform physical tasks such as climbing steps and standing for extended periods.
- Valid driver's license.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with ultra-high vacuum (UHV) systems.
- Experience with quantum sensing techniques, specifically nitrogen-vacancy (NV) magnetometry.
- Experience training students on the use of scientific instruments.
- Previous experience working in an academic or research laboratory environment.
- Ability to operate a forklift.
