About the role

Responsibilities

  • Develop, manage, and consult on campus-wide safety programming, including hazard identification, WHMIS, and emergency preparedness
  • Provide strategic leadership to ensure alignment with UBC policies and compliance with ISO45001:2018 standards
  • Act as a primary liaison between the University and external regulatory agencies such as WorkSafeBC
  • Manage and develop an Occupational Health and Safety Associate
  • Conduct risk-based departmental reviews, hazard assessments, and incident investigations
  • Develop safe work procedures, training programs, and safety policies to foster a campus-wide safety culture
  • Monitor and analyze safety trends, incidents, and statistics to report to University leadership

Requirements

  • Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline
  • Minimum of 4 years of professional experience
  • At least 2 years of experience in a relevant safety specialization
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite

Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong senior-level report writing, program planning, and analytical skills
  • Effective public speaking, presentation, and training abilities
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with diverse academic, administrative, and union groups
  • Ability to apply complex standards and policies to various workplace situations
  • Ability to wear personal protective equipment, such as hard hats or respirators
