About the role
Responsibilities
- Develop, manage, and consult on campus-wide safety programming, including hazard identification, WHMIS, and emergency preparedness
- Provide strategic leadership to ensure alignment with UBC policies and compliance with ISO45001:2018 standards
- Act as a primary liaison between the University and external regulatory agencies such as WorkSafeBC
- Manage and develop an Occupational Health and Safety Associate
- Conduct risk-based departmental reviews, hazard assessments, and incident investigations
- Develop safe work procedures, training programs, and safety policies to foster a campus-wide safety culture
- Monitor and analyze safety trends, incidents, and statistics to report to University leadership
Requirements
- Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline
- Minimum of 4 years of professional experience
- At least 2 years of experience in a relevant safety specialization
- Valid Class 5 driver’s license
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
Preferred Qualifications
- Strong senior-level report writing, program planning, and analytical skills
- Effective public speaking, presentation, and training abilities
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively with diverse academic, administrative, and union groups
- Ability to apply complex standards and policies to various workplace situations
- Ability to wear personal protective equipment, such as hard hats or respirators
