About the role

Responsibilities

  • Teach riding lessons to students and the public, delivering 18-22 lessons per week during the academic year
  • Coach and oversee the Otterbein equestrian teams and maintain a competitive program
  • Manage competition travel for riders and horses in alignment with departmental guidelines
  • Assist in the maintenance of the school horse herd, including grooming, exercising, and daily chores
  • Support stable operations such as feeding, turnout, watering, and general facility care
  • Provide ongoing schooling for horses owned or leased by the University
  • Assist with recruitment efforts, promotional programs, and campus tours
  • Support faculty and management with on-call responsibilities and equine emergencies

Requirements

  • Extensive competitive eventing experience at the preliminary level or above
  • Strong horsemanship skills with experience training both horses and riders
  • Valid driver's license and experience hauling horses
  • Active USEF membership
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds and occasionally push/pull up to 100 pounds
  • Excellent verbal and written English communication skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a field related to animals
  • ICP certifications
  • Recognized show experience in other equestrian disciplines
  • Knowledge of IHSA, IDA, and/or IEA organizations
