Research Communications Manager, Safety

Responsibilities

• Develop and execute external communications strategies for OpenAI's safety research, including alignment, evaluations, and preparedness.
• Translate complex technical work into accessible narratives for researchers, journalists, and policymakers without oversimplifying or overstating impact.
• Partner deeply with safety and alignment researchers to identify key ideas and position them effectively in the public sphere.
• Lead proactive storytelling across multiple channels such as blogs, video, podcasts, and events.
• Support research launches and publications by collaborating with editorial, design, and policy teams.
• Manage media engagement and build trusted relationships with science, technology, and AI journalists.
• Identify and mitigate potential reputational or scientific risks associated with high-profile safety research topics.

Requirements

• 7+ years of experience in research, science, technology, or safety-related communications.
• Demonstrated experience working directly with scientists, engineers, or technical leaders.
• Strong understanding of AI, machine learning, or safety research domains.
• Exceptional writing and editing skills with the ability to adapt tone for diverse audiences.
• Strong project management skills and experience managing multiple workstreams in fast-paced environments.
• Strong judgment when handling complex, ambiguous, or high-stakes narratives.
