About the role

Responsibilities

  • Set up, maintain, and supply chemicals and equipment for undergraduate chemistry teaching laboratories.
  • Prepare, standardize, and dispense solutions and analytical standards with high precision, including performing algebraic calculations and weighing solids.
  • Troubleshoot, calibrate, and maintain complex laboratory instrumentation such as HPLC, GC-MS, ICP-MS, and UV-Vis spectrometers.
  • Manage chemical inventory, order supplies, and lead laboratory safety programs in compliance with WHMIS regulations.
  • Handle hazardous chemical waste disposal and manage chemical spills.
  • Assist in the development and testing of new experiments and operating procedures.
  • Supervise summer and work-study students regarding laboratory safety practices.
  • Perform physical tasks including lifting up to 20kg and transporting high-pressure gas cylinders.

Requirements

  • Completion of a relevant technical program or a university degree in a relevant discipline.
  • Minimum of 3 years of related experience in a laboratory setting.
  • Familiarity with WHMIS regulations and laboratory safety protocols.
  • Ability to lift up to 20kg and meet the physical demands of a busy teaching lab.
  • Strong organizational and logistical skills to manage lab schedules and supplies.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree or diploma specifically in Chemistry.
  • Extensive experience in an analytical laboratory setting.
  • Proven expertise in high-accuracy solution preparation and standardization.
  • Proficiency in using data acquisition hardware and software.
