About the role

Responsibilities

  • Provide high-quality, compassionate care to small laboratory animals in accordance with CCAC guidelines and research protocols.
  • Perform daily husbandry tasks including feeding, weaning, breeding, and health/welfare surveillance.
  • Maintain facility cleanliness, including cage washing, equipment sterilization, and organization of storage areas.
  • Execute minor technical procedures such as sample collection, injections, euthanasia, and necropsy under supervision.
  • Manage animal shipments, including receiving, packing, and processing biological or hazardous materials.
  • Maintain accurate records, inventories, and health reports for animal colonies.
  • Assist research staff with animal care techniques and demonstrate tasks to new hires.

Requirements

  • High school graduation or equivalent.
  • Minimum of two years of related experience in animal care or a laboratory setting.
  • Proven experience working with small laboratory animals.
  • Working knowledge of Canadian Council on Animal Care (CCAC) guidelines.
  • Physical ability to lift up to 25 kgs and perform tasks involving continuous walking, bending, and stooping.
  • Ability to work in a regulated environment requiring strict adherence to SOPs and personal protective equipment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree or diploma in an animal-related field (e.g., B.Sc. or AHT diploma).
  • CALAS Registered Laboratory Animal Technician (RLAT) designation.
  • Experience working in a CL2 environment or with research/industry teams.
  • Strong understanding of veterinary technology, anatomy, and pharmacology.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and ability to use digital monitoring tools.
