About the role

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a general assignment reporter covering the St. Lawrence Valley region
  • Produce high-quality news stories for broadcast, digital, and social media platforms
  • Identify and establish a "mini-beat" to provide deep-dive coverage on specific topics
  • Collaborate with editors and fellow reporters on special projects and investigative journalism
  • Work independently to find and tell stories that represent diverse voices in the community
  • File national stories with NPR and other public media outlets when appropriate
  • Act as a backup for live on-air shifts as necessary

Requirements

  • At least 1 year of reporting experience, preferably in public radio
  • Strong background in journalism for both radio and digital platforms
  • Excellent writing skills tailored for broadcast and web audiences
  • Valid driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including nights and weekends

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ability to record and gather high-quality audio in the field
  • Proficiency with audio editing systems such as Adobe Audition
  • Knowledge of the history and culture of northern New York and the St. Lawrence Valley
  • Multi-media expertise including photography, visual journalism, or data-based reporting
