About the role
Responsibilities
- Provide high-level surgical and technical support to the animal-based research community.
- Perform veterinary procedures including medication administration, surgical preparation, and anesthetic monitoring.
- Conduct health checks, handle and restrain various animal species, and perform postoperative care.
- Monitor the physical, behavioral, and environmental requirements of individual species.
- Maintain an extensive inventory of surgical supplies, narcotics, and controlled drugs.
- Ensure facility compliance with CCAC guidelines and all applicable safety regulations.
- Package and process biological, biochemical, and radioactive materials.
- Implement species-specific environmental enrichment programs to promote animal well-being.
Requirements
- Diploma in Veterinary Technology.
- Registered Veterinary Technologist (RVT) designation.
- Minimum of three years of related experience.
- Proficiency in surgical and anesthetic monitoring skills.
- Strong knowledge of laboratory animal science.
- Ability to work in environments involving hazardous materials, radioisotopes, and potentially lethal pathogens.
- Physical ability to lift up to 25 kg and assist in lifting animals up to 150 kg.
Preferred Qualifications
- CALAS Registered Laboratory Animal Technician (RLAT) designation.
- Experience working with both small and large animals in a research capacity.
- Experience working in CL1 and CL2 environments with risk group 1 and 2 materials.
- Experience collaborating with industry or academic research teams.
- Advanced competency in radiography and intensive/critical care.
