Registered Practical Nurse

Responsibilities

• Initiate, monitor, and discontinue hemodialysis treatments for patients
• Provide person-centred care including patient assessments, health teaching, and family counselling
• Set up, monitor, and troubleshoot hemodialysis machines
• Respond to rapid changes in patient hemodynamic status within the RPN scope of practice
• Collaborate with RNs and the inter-professional team to ensure high-quality care
• Participate in unit quality improvement and research project teams

Requirements

• Completion of an approved Registered Practical Nursing Program
• Current registration in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO)
• BCLS Level II (Basic Rescuer) certification
• Completion of an RPN medication course
• Completion of Nephrology 1 and 2 courses (or willingness to enroll and complete within specified timelines)
• Minimum 5 years of medical/surgical acute care nursing experience
• Minimum 3 years of hemodialysis experience or equivalent combination of training and experience
• Proven experience with medication administration via multiple routes

Preferred Qualifications

• Completion of a Health Assessment or Physical Assessment course
