About the role
Responsibilities
- Serve as the technical authority and designated Radiation Safety Officer for the Idaho Radioisotopes Laboratory (IRL) in accordance with NRC and State regulations.
- Establish, maintain, and enforce radiation protection standards, radiological controls, and operational procedures.
- Provide technical oversight for radioactive material handling, isotope production, contamination controls, and waste management.
- Lead and mentor radiation protection personnel to maintain a strong radiological safety culture.
- Perform complex radiological evaluations, including shielding analyses, dose assessments, and ALARA planning.
- Act as the primary technical interface with regulatory authorities during inspections, audits, and licensing activities.
- Lead investigations into radiological events and abnormal occurrences, including root cause analysis.
- Partner with engineering, operations, and leadership teams to align safety strategies with facility objectives.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Health Physics, Nuclear Engineering, Radiochemistry, Physics, or a related technical discipline.
- Minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible experience in health physics or radiation safety within regulated nuclear or laboratory environments.
- Demonstrated experience managing radiation protection programs in regulated radiological environments.
- Strong working knowledge of NRC regulations, ALARA practices, and contamination controls.
- Proven experience leading or supervising technical staff.
- Excellent technical writing and communication skills for interacting with regulators and senior leadership.
Preferred Qualifications
- Certified Health Physicist (CHP) designation.
- Experience supporting radioisotope production facilities, hot cell operations, or glovebox environments.
- Experience with startup, commissioning, or operational readiness activities.
- Experience interfacing directly with NRC inspectors or Agreement State regulators.
- Familiarity with radioactive material transportation and laboratory radiological controls.
