About the role
Responsibilities
- Manage and coordinate public records requests for the Sheriff’s Office in compliance with the Washington Public Records Act (RCW 42.56) and county policies.
- Perform detailed records review, legal analysis, and redaction of exempt information to safeguard confidential and sensitive data.
- Interpret complex records requests and coordinate with legal counsel, county departments, and outside agencies.
- Maintain accurate documentation, exemption logs, and redaction logs throughout the disclosure process.
- Manage records in accordance with county retention schedules.
- Communicate with requestors regarding clarifications, payment for copies, and file assistance.
- Review various record types, including law enforcement, inmate, and medical records, which may contain graphic or disturbing content.
Requirements
- Associate’s degree (AA) or equivalent in Office Management, Public Administration, or a closely related field.
- Minimum of 3 years of clerical or records retention experience.
- Working knowledge of the Washington Public Records Act.
- Ability to handle graphic or disturbing content within law enforcement and medical records.
- Proficiency in specialized records management software and redaction tools.
Preferred Qualifications
- Certification as a Public Records Officer by the Washington State Association of Public Records Officials.
- Experience working within a law enforcement or government agency environment.
