About the role
Responsibilities
- Direct and manage all operations of the Public Disclosure Unit, including strategic planning and program development.
- Ensure agency compliance with the Washington Public Records Act (PRA), retention schedules, and related statutory requirements.
- Oversee high-volume and complex public records requests, including body-worn and dash camera recordings.
- Collaborate with the Prosecuting Attorney’s Office on litigation, including the preparation of declarations and affidavits.
- Lead, supervise, and evaluate professional and technical staff, providing coaching and performance management.
- Develop and monitor the unit budget, including fiscal management and resource allocation.
- Serve as the primary subject matter expert and advisor to the Sheriff on public records matters.
- Develop and deliver agency-wide training on public records law and disclosure best practices.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in public administration, business administration, legal studies, or a closely related field.
- Minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in public records, records management, or legal compliance.
- Valid driver's license.
- Ability to successfully pass a comprehensive criminal background check, polygraph exam, and drug screening.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in a relevant field.
- At least two years of management-level experience supervising professional or technical staff.
- Extensive knowledge of Washington State public records law and related case law.
- Experience in local government operations.
- Professional certification related to public records or records management (e.g., WAPRO).
