Responsibilities
- Plan, execute, and monitor microbial fermentation processes in 1–10L bioreactors
- Independently troubleshoot bioreactor systems including pH, dissolved oxygen, and temperature
- Prepare media, buffers, and inoculum using aseptic techniques and established SOPs
- Design and execute experiments to optimize process parameters for yield and scalability
- Collect and analyze in-process samples such as OD, cell counts, and metabolite concentrations
- Utilize analytical methods like spectrophotometry and HPLC to assess product quality
- Support scale-up activities by translating lab-scale results into pilot-scale recommendations
- Document experimental plans, methods, and data in a compliant manner
- Collaborate with upstream, downstream, and analytical teams to align on strategies
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in microbiology, biotechnology, biochemical/chemical engineering, or a related field
- Hands-on experience operating microbial fermentation and bench-scale bioreactor systems
- Familiarity with aseptic techniques and microbial cultivation
- Working understanding of microbial physiology and fermentation kinetics
- Experience designing and analyzing experiments
- Proficiency with data analysis tools such as Excel or JMP
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and stand for extended periods
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with automated bioreactor systems (Sartorius, Applikon, Eppendorf)
- Knowledge of batch and fed-batch strategies
- Experience with scale-up or technology transfer
- Experience working with industrial microbial strains and complex media formulations
