Pro Bono Fellow

Responsibilities

• Provide legal services to the Newark community, focusing on housing rights and unmet legal needs of low-income individuals and families
• Engage in litigation-focused work, including representing clients at hearings, trials, immigration interviews, and settlement negotiations
• Develop and participate in broad-based advocacy strategies to drive public policy and increase community services
• Conduct research to inform systemic reform advocacy and serve as amicus counsel in appellate proceedings
• Perform community education through "know-your-rights" presentations and public speaking

Requirements

• Strong commitment to public interest law and practice
• Excellent research, writing, and interpersonal skills
• Ability to convey complex legal concepts to a non-lawyer audience
• Admission to the New Jersey bar required within six months of starting
• Strong connection to and commitment to the City of Newark

Preferred Qualifications

• Fluency in Spanish or other languages commonly spoken in Newark
• Previous experience with judicial clerkships
