Principal Systems Engineer

Responsibilities

• Support the development and sustainment of the STARS air traffic control system through hardware engineering, software development, and technical testing.
• Work onsite at the FAA’s William J. Hughes Technical Center, collaborating directly with customers to drive innovation and solve technical challenges.
• Verify system requirements by developing compliance artifacts and acceptance documentation to ensure high standards of performance and safety.
• Perform systems deployment, troubleshooting, bug fixes, and technical documentation for both hardware and software enhancements.
• Collaborate with multi-level engineering teams, program management, and external stakeholders to support project costs and schedules.

Requirements

• STEM degree with 8+ years of relevant experience, or an Advanced Degree with 5+ years of experience.
• Proven experience working in Linux environments.
• U.S. citizenship is required for access to program information.
• Ability to obtain a U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) clearance.

Preferred Qualifications

• Prior experience in Air Traffic Control, Airspace/Aircraft Services, or Technical Operations.
• Knowledge of Layer 2 and 3 networking (VLANs, STP, routing protocols) and experience with network hardware (Cisco, Juniper, etc.).
• Programming skills in C, C++, Python, or modeling tools like MATLAB.
• Experience with configuration management tools such as Jira, Jenkins, Git, or Bitbucket.
• Experience with cloud-based systems, containers, and virtual machines.
• Experience supporting FAA government contracts or working with Red Hat Linux.
