Principal Software Engineer

Responsibilities

• Own and evolve the architecture for Airwallex’s external traffic stack, including API Gateways, DNS services, CDNs, and Global Accelerators.
• Partner with InfoSec to design and operationalize border security, including DDoS protection, bot mitigation, and WAF.
• Build end-to-end processes and tooling for policy-driven API route management, registration, and change management.
• Establish reliability and Quality of Service (QoS) goals for critical global paths such as payments and authentication.
• Design for hybrid/multi-cloud edge strategies and optimize latency and failover across multiple regions.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
• 10+ years of back-end development experience building large-scale, high-throughput services.
• Proficiency in Java, Go, Python, or similar languages with strong system-thinking skills.
• Deep experience in cloud-native edge networking (API Gateway, DNS, CDN, and firewalls).
• Proven ability to partner across product, platform, and security teams to solve complex problems.

Preferred Qualifications

• Proficiency with SDN concepts and tools such as Envoy, NGINX/OpenResty, Kong, or Apisix.
• Familiarity with Cloudflare and AWS or GCP Cloud Networking techniques.
• Knowledge of hybrid/multi-cloud patterns and large-scale traffic engineering.
• Hands-on experience with cloud firewall systems, WAF, rate limiting, and bot detection.
• Experience supporting financial or highly regulated workloads.
• Familiarity with Kubernetes traffic management frameworks.
