About the role
Responsibilities
- Lead the design, analysis, and development of high-precision optical and visual display systems for aviation, spacecraft, and head-worn applications
- Create system-level optical requirements and ensure alignment across mechanical, electrical, and systems engineering teams
- Perform tolerance analysis, stray-light analysis, STOP analysis, and manufacturability reviews
- Develop detailed optical designs using tools such as Zemax OpticStudio and LightTools
- Guide prototype development, including hands-on breadboarding, optical alignment, and test system creation
- Mentor junior and mid-level engineers and influence technology roadmaps
- Document test processes, engineering reports, and design reviews for stakeholders
Requirements
- STEM degree and minimum 8 years of relevant industry experience (or an Advanced Degree with 5+ years of experience)
- 8+ years of experience in optical design, imaging, illumination, spectroscopy, or related system-level engineering
- Expertise with optical modeling tools such as Zemax OpticStudio, Code V, LightTools, FRED, or MATLAB/Python
- Strong understanding of optomechanical interfaces, tolerance analysis, and optical test methodologies
- Proven success transitioning optical systems from concept into full product development and manufacturing
- U.S. citizenship is required
Preferred Qualifications
- Degree specifically in Optical Engineering
- 10+ years of industry experience in optical design and analysis
- Demonstrated experience in the design and development of imaging systems
- Experience with analytical instruments, laser-based systems, imaging sensors, or spectroscopy platforms
- Ability to lead multidisciplinary engineering efforts and resolve complex technical issues
