About the role

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the lead forecaster and meteorological advisor, integrating real-time and forecasted data to manage weather impacts on the electric system.
  • Monitor and analyze meteorological data, including surface observations, satellite imagery, NEXRAD Doppler radar, and NWP data using AWIPS.
  • Deliver short-, medium-, and long-range forecasts, with a specific focus on fire weather conditions like Santa Ana winds, heat waves, and winter storms.
  • Prepare non-routine weather reports to support Department Emergency Operations Center activations and major construction activities.
  • Collaborate with engineering and operations teams to integrate weather data into wildfire mitigation strategies and community resilience planning.
  • Act as the primary liaison with the National Weather Service, Cal Fire, and research institutions to advance meteorological science.
  • Support Department Emergency Operations Center activations, which may include shift-based overtime, nights, weekends, and holidays.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Atmospheric Science, Environmental Science, or a related field.
  • 8+ years of operational forecasting experience in a challenging environment (utility experience preferred).
  • Mastery of theoretical meteorology, including atmospheric dynamics and mesoscale meteorology.
  • Advanced knowledge of fire weather concepts and forecasting techniques.
  • Proficiency in meteorological software and tools.
  • Exceptional communication skills with the ability to translate complex data for technical and non-technical audiences.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certified Consulting Meteorologist (CCM) designation.
