About the role

About the Company

The Generative Biology Institute (GBI), part of the Ellison Institute of Technology (EIT), aims to lay the foundations for engineering biology. Led by founding Director Jason Chin, GBI focuses on making biology engineerable by enabling the rapid synthesis of genomes and understanding DNA sequences to generate desired biological functions. The institute will operate from a state-of-the-art facility in the Oxford Science Park.

Responsibilities

  • Set the research direction for an independent research group aligned with GBI’s vision
  • Recruit and manage a team of researchers, including postdocs, doctoral students, and research assistants
  • Mentor early career researchers to achieve group goals and career objectives
  • Collaborate with other GBI groups and the broader EIT family on transformational research
  • Help shape GBI facilities as part of the scientific strategy

Requirements

  • PhD in a relevant scientific discipline (e.g., synthetic biology, computational biology, AI, genomics, or nucleic acids chemistry)
  • Strong publication record demonstrating transformational research advances
  • Proven track record of building and managing academic or industry collaborations
  • Strong leadership and communication skills
  • Eligibility to work in the UK
  • Ability to be based in or near Oxford, England

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience running an independent research group as a Professor or Assistant Professor
  • Experience in a commercial biotech or AI-driven research setting
