About the role
Responsibilities
- Supervise daily operations of the Interventional Radiology (IR) authorization and referral team, including workflow management and staffing coverage.
- Oversee authorization workflows across Manhattan and Westchester locations to ensure standardized processes and timely patient clearance.
- Manage referral and authorization work queues, ensuring appropriate follow-up and patient outreach regarding status and documentation.
- Serve as the primary escalation point for complex payer issues, medical necessity disputes, and denied services.
- Monitor authorization denials, identify trends, and implement corrective action plans to improve reimbursement outcomes.
- Provide guidance, mentorship, and performance management to junior authorization specialists.
- Conduct quality assurance audits to ensure compliance with HIPAA, payer regulations, and organizational policies.
- Collaborate with physicians, nursing teams, and revenue cycle leadership to minimize delays in patient care.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent in education and experience.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in healthcare insurance authorization, revenue cycle, managed care, or physician billing.
- Demonstrated experience managing complex authorization cases, insurance escalations, and denials.
- Experience supporting procedural or surgical specialties.
- Strong knowledge of insurance eligibility verification and referral processes.
Preferred Qualifications
- 4-5+ years of experience in healthcare insurance authorization or related operations.
- Experience specifically within Interventional Radiology, Radiology, or Surgical Services.
- Knowledge of CPT/HCPCS coding, ICD-10 diagnosis coding, and medical terminology.
- Previous experience working in an academic medical center or large healthcare organization.
