Requirements

Ph.D. in oceanography, marine chemistry, or geochemistry, Background in ocean biogeochemistry and carbonate chemistry, Proficiency in Python, Experience with biogeochemical model code, Knowledge of marine mineral dissolution and particle dynamics

Skills

Python

About the role

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement a 1D OAE process-model testbed within the C-Star modeling system to allow rapid prototyping and iteration.
  • Develop generalized representations of sinking particulate material, including parameterizations for mineral dissolution, precipitation kinetics, and sinking velocities.
  • Calibrate representations of particles generated via electrochemical and mineral alkalinity addition in collaboration with industry partners.
  • Run large perturbed-parameter ensembles to explore parameter space and assess uncertainty in OAE-relevant outcomes.
  • Validate parameterizations against empirical laboratory and field datasets.
  • Implement process formulations within the ROMS-MARBL framework to ensure portability to 3D configurations.
  • Contribute to C-Star software infrastructure, including documentation and reproducibility standards.
  • Submit peer-reviewed manuscripts documenting calibration, validation, and scientific findings.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. in oceanography, marine chemistry, geochemistry, chemical oceanography, or a closely related field.
  • Strong background in ocean biogeochemistry, including carbonate chemistry, alkalinity, and marine carbon cycling.
  • Familiarity with marine mineral dissolution/precipitation kinetics and/or particle dynamics.
  • Proficiency in scientific software development using Python.
  • Experience working with biogeochemical model code (Python, Fortran, or Julia).
  • Ability to design systematic numerical experiments and communicate findings clearly.
  • Collaborative disposition for working with both academic researchers and industry stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with MARBL or a comparable marine biogeochemistry library, including ROMS-MARBL coupling.
  • Prior research on OAE, mineral weathering, or alkalinity-modifying processes.
  • Experience developing, calibrating, or validating numerical models.
  • Laboratory or field experience with OAE experiments or marine carbonate chemistry measurements.
  • Familiarity with Bayesian calibration methods, ensemble parameter estimation, or uncertainty quantification.

About the Company

[C]Worthy is a non-profit research organization focused on transforming research-grade oceanographic models into open, reproducible, and auditable decision-support tools for ocean-based carbon dioxide removal (CDR). We are building essential open-science capabilities, including the C-Star modeling platform and the Ocean CDR Atlas, to provide the foundation for scalable and transparent ocean science.
