Police Sergeant

Responsibilities

• Provide leadership, direction, and training to University Police Officers and Campus Safety personnel, primarily after normal business hours.
• Plan and direct patrol and support services on assigned shifts.
• Respond to emergencies, crises, and calls for service, acting as a first responder and liaison to local law enforcement.
• Conduct investigations at crime and accident scenes, including gathering evidence and questioning witnesses.
• Oversee emergency dispatch center and front gate operations during assigned shifts.
• Perform routine patrol activities on foot and in vehicles to protect persons and property.
• Enforce state and local laws, University policies, and behavioral standards.
• Manage collateral duties such as scheduling, report review, staff training, and evidence management.
• Participate in community policing initiatives and collaborate with campus departments like Residence Life.

Requirements

• At least 21 years of age.
• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Certification by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board as a full-time Police Officer.
• Minimum of five years of experience as a full-time law enforcement officer.
• Valid Illinois driver’s license with a good driving record.
• Ability to pass psychological and physical examinations, as well as a background investigation.
• Ability to work flexible schedules, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
• Physical ability to walk, run, climb, and operate required equipment in various weather conditions.

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
• Previous experience as a police supervisor.
• Previous experience in campus law enforcement or student development.
• Proficiency in common business software applications (word processing, spreadsheets, etc.).
