About the role
Responsibilities
- Recruit and enroll farmers into the Advancing Markets for Producers (AMP) project
- Conduct on-farm demonstrations focused on nutrient and manure management for vegetable and specialty crop systems
- Provide technical assistance and training to farmers and technicians on nutrient management, slurry manure utilization, and cover-crop fertility
- Assist farmers in developing crop-specific nutrient plans based on soil conditions and crop requirements
- Lead outreach and education strategies to disseminate regenerative agriculture practices
- Develop and deliver educational programming related to nutrient management and regenerative systems
- Document, evaluate, and report program outcomes for USDA and institutional requirements
- Collaborate with project leadership to ensure activities align with grant objectives and timelines
Requirements
- Ph.D. in horticulture, sustainable plant systems, soil science, agronomy, or a closely related field
- Experience in specialty crop production (e.g., vegetables or other plant-production systems)
- Expertise in nutrient management, soil health, or regenerative agriculture
- Experience with drip irrigation systems and/or organic production practices
- Valid driver’s license and reliable vehicle for regular travel to project farms across Ohio
- Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull up to 30 lbs
- Strong written and verbal communication skills and proficiency with computer technologies for data analysis and reporting
Preferred Qualifications
- Extension and/or research experience beyond completion of the Ph.D.
- Demonstrated history of effective collaboration with farmers and agricultural professionals
- Teaching experience in formal or informal educational settings
- Knowledge of the extension system and commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion
- Ability to communicate effectively with individuals from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds
