About the role
Responsibilities
- Carry out maintenance and repair of mechanical plant equipment in the workshop and on-site
- Diagnose and repair complex faults in mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and engine systems
- Lead the mobilisation of specialist plant equipment including ventilation and hyperbaric systems
- Support the development of apprentices and junior fitters through mentoring
- Perform inspections, preventative maintenance, basic welding, and flame cutting
- Ensure compliance with UK Health & Safety legislation and company policies
- Maintain accurate records and assist with planning and stock control
- Be prepared to travel within the UK at short notice
Requirements
- Time-served Plant Fitter or equivalent mechanical engineering qualification (NVQ Level 3 or City & Guilds)
- Proven experience in plant maintenance and repair
- Strong knowledge of hydraulic, mechanical, and basic electrical systems
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and schematics
- Excellent fault-finding and problem-solving skills
- Strong communication and leadership abilities
Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledge of the tunnelling industry and associated plant
- Basic welding and cutting skills
- LOLER/PUWER awareness
- Forklift or plant operation tickets (e.g., CPCS, NPORS)
