About the role
Responsibilities
- Supervise, mentor, and evaluate payroll specialists while managing workload distribution and professional development.
- Oversee all bi-weekly and monthly payroll processes to ensure accuracy and timeliness.
- Lead the comprehensive year-end W-2 process, including reconciliation and auditing of wage and tax data.
- Monitor federal, state, and local payroll regulations to ensure full institutional compliance.
- Prepare and execute monthly and quarterly tax returns and reconcile payroll withholding accounts.
- Manage payroll retirement reporting, ensuring accurate contributions and compliance with plan documents.
- Resolve complex payroll inquiries and escalations from various university departments.
- Analyze and implement process efficiencies and collaborate on system updates within Banner.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree with 3 years of related experience in payroll, finance, or accounting; OR an associate’s degree with 5 years of related experience; OR a high school diploma with 7 years of related experience.
- Demonstrated experience in a supervisory or lead role.
- Extensive knowledge of federal, state, and local tax regulations related to compensation.
- Proven experience managing year-end tax reporting processes (W-2s).
- Proficiency in MS Office, specifically advanced Excel skills (vlookups, pivot tables).
- Experience processing payroll in Banner or other Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) applications.
- Strong analytical, written, and verbal communication skills with high attention to detail.
Preferred Qualifications
- Direct experience with 1042-S tax filing and nonresident alien taxation compliance.
- Previous experience processing payroll specifically within Ellucian (Banner).
- Experience working within a Higher Education environment.
- Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) or Fundamental Payroll Certification (FPC) designation.
