Patent Counsel

Responsibilities

• Partner with engineers, scientists, and product leaders to identify patentable innovations and develop mature invention disclosures.
• Lead third-party patent portfolio analysis, freedom-to-operate reviews, and risk assessments in collaboration with senior legal leadership.
• Support litigation matters through detailed claims analysis.
• Manage the day-to-day operation of the WHOOP trademark portfolio, including filings, renewals, and enforcement.
• Develop and implement internal IP policies, workflows, and training programs to improve how teams protect intellectual property.
• Build scalable operational processes for patent portfolio management and maintain internal docketing systems.
• Translate complex IP concepts into practical guidance for Legal, R&D, and Product teams.

Requirements

• J.D. from an accredited law school and USPTO patent attorney registration.
• Active membership in at least one U.S. state bar.
• 6+ years of experience in patent law and intellectual property counseling.
• Experience working directly with technical teams to evaluate inventions and translate concepts into strong patent disclosures.
• Familiarity with patent landscape analysis, freedom-to-operate, and coordinating with outside counsel.
• Ability to build processes and improve workflows within a growing legal or IP function.

Preferred Qualifications

• Technical background in electrical engineering, signal processing, or optics.
• Experience managing or supporting trademark portfolio work.
• Experience in both major law firms and in-house environments.
