About the role
Responsibilities
- Teach JNL 221: Foundations of Data and Data Journalism during the Fall 2026 semester
- Develop a comprehensive syllabus and prepare all course materials and readings
- Instruct students on digital best practices, including data analysis, web presentation, and data visualization
- Guide students through finding stories in datasets, using Datawrapper, and publishing to GitHub
- Hold weekly on-campus office hours to provide student support and mentorship
- Grade assignments and examinations in a timely manner and submit required academic reports
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree preferred
- Professional experience in journalism (as a reporter, editor, or newsroom manager) applying data to news stories
- Knowledge of HTML and CSS
- Ability to instruct classes in person on designated days and times in Syracuse, NY
- Ability to provide patient instruction to students who may have limited experience or apprehension regarding data and numbers
