Optical Engineer

Responsibilities

• Conduct high-power laser research and development for national security and explosive applications
• Perform laser material effects data analysis and document technical findings
• Design and execute complex laboratory tests and kilowatt-class optical systems
• Provide hardware/software development, field deployment, and end-user training
• Represent the laboratory in discussions with government agency personnel regarding national nuclear incident response missions

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in a relevant engineering or scientific discipline (or equivalent combination of education and experience)
• Active DOE Q clearance or equivalent U.S. government security clearance
• Experience with high-power laser research and analysis
• Proficiency in data analysis using programming languages such as Matlab or Python

Preferred Qualifications

• Graduate degree in Electrical Engineering or a highly related field
• Experience with kW Class IV lasers and high voltage components
• Proficiency with optical design and fabrication tools such as ZEMAX and Solidworks
• Experience using laboratory test equipment including oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, and data acquisition systems
• Knowledge of National Instruments DAQ and LabView programming
• Experience serving as a Qualified Laser Safety Officer
