Optical Engineer III

Responsibilities

• Monitor Optical Long Haul and Metro networks and troubleshoot issues in a timely manner
• Engineer, commission, and validate backbone optical transport systems for new builds and capacity augmentation
• Evaluate optical performance using field measurements and network management system data (OSNR, span loss, BER)
• Deploy, configure, and test DWDM, ROADM, and optical amplification systems
• Develop and execute Methods of Procedure (MOPs) for optical circuit turn-ups and maintenance
• Coordinate with field technicians, vendors, and cross-functional teams to integrate optical systems
• Perform remote turn-up and acceptance testing, including power balancing and channel provisioning
• Document and optimize operational processes, including the creation of monitors, alerts, and dashboards
• Identify automation opportunities using scripting or coding skills

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree (B.S/B.A) and 5 to 8 years of related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience
• Experience working with geometrical and physical optics, radiometry, and lens design
• Understanding of optical design and tolerance analysis
• Deep understanding of stray light analysis and non-sequential ray trace tools
• Knowledge of building and testing optical systems
• Excellent communication and teamwork skills

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with laser systems
• Experience with CAD software
• Understanding of design for manufacturing and/or assembly
