About the role

Responsibilities

  • Design robust, cost-effective coating production processes that meet customer specifications.
  • Transfer knowledge of new coating designs and processes into manufacturing through training, work instructions, and process sheets.
  • Interface with Development and Optical Design teams to analyze technical trade-offs and risks regarding coating properties.
  • Utilize in-house software to model system-level coating performance, including transmission uniformity and thickness variation.
  • Collaborate with Mechanical Design teams to fabricate prototype tooling and customized coating chamber hardware.
  • Provide engineering support to technicians, defining test activities, hardware evaluation, and data analysis.
  • Lead projects to advance coating technology and metrology capabilities, including documenting intellectual property.

Requirements

  • B.S. degree in Optical Science/Engineering, Physics, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Ceramic Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering (M.S. preferred).
  • 5+ years of experience in optical coating design and manufacturing.
  • Proven experience working within the UV and visible wavelength ranges.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with coating and optical design/modeling software such as FilmStar, OptiLayer, WVASE, or Code V.
  • Proficiency in thin film characterization using spectrophotometers, ellipsometers, SEM, or TEM.
  • Hands-on experience with electron beam, thermal evaporation, or ion-assisted deposition in high-vacuum environments.
  • Knowledge of contamination control and cleanroom operations.
  • Programming skills in MATLAB, Python, or MS Excel.
  • Ability to interpret mechanical drawings and specifications.
