Ophthalmic Technician

Responsibilities

• Assist attending and resident physicians in the examination and care of patients within the Ophthalmology clinic.
• Take and record patient medical, family, and medication histories, as well as ocular history.
• Measure and record visual acuities and intraocular pressures.
• Evaluate pupils, estimate anterior chamber depth, and examine eyes for afferent papillary defects.
• Administer eye drops, dressings, and shields.
• Assist physicians during surgical procedures.
• Instruct patients on post-operative care and ensure proper documentation.
• Perform clinical tests including color vision, lensometry, exophthalmetry, Amsler Grid, and Schirmer testing.
• Maintain instruments, equipment, and a sterile environment, while managing supply inventory.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalency.
• Successful completion of an accredited Ophthalmic Technician program.
• One year of satisfactory work experience under ophthalmological supervision.
• Certification by the Joint Commission on Allied Health personnel in Ophthalmology or equivalent.
• Current CPR certification.
• Strong communication skills and the ability to handle public contact with discretion and tact.
• Ability to prioritize work and determine if a situation is urgent, emergent, or routine.
