About the role

Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership and management for the 4B1 Adult Medical-Surgical Unit, overseeing nursing and support staff.
  • Assist the Clinical Nursing Director in planning and managing patient care services.
  • Supervise personnel activities, including interviewing, selecting, orienting, coaching, and evaluating staff.
  • Maintain a significant presence on the unit through rounding on patients and families to ensure excellence in care.
  • Manage unit operations, including staffing coordination, budget input, and payroll monitoring.
  • Implement hospital policies, regulatory standards, and quality improvement activities.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to create an ideal patient experience and integrate research into clinical practice.
  • Rotate to off-shifts (evenings and nights) as required by staffing needs.

Requirements

  • BSN OR an Associate/Diploma in Nursing with a Master's degree in Nursing.
  • Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Michigan.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of RN experience.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of recent (within the last 5 years) RN experience in General Adult Medical-Surgical care.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience (e.g., Charge Nurse, Team Leader, or management roles).
  • Nurse Leadership certification (CNML or NE-BC) or the ability to obtain it within two years of hire.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Two years of recent general medical-surgical RN experience.
  • Previous unit committee membership.
  • Knowledge of University of Michigan Hospitals and Health Centers policies and practices.
  • Strong interpersonal, problem-solving, and clinical analytical skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel) and ability to extract data from hospital databases.
