About the role
Responsibilities
- Participate in a two-phase internship: first with Morning Edition (newsmagazine production) and then with the NPR Washington Desk (politics and national security).
- Pitch news and feature story ideas and host interview topics.
- Book guests and conduct phone pre-interviews.
- Conduct research for editors and reporters to support political and national security coverage.
- Assist in recording, producing, and editing radio pieces and host interviews.
- Write host copy, interview questions, and digital stories for the web.
- Learn NPR’s radio journalism ethical standards and production practices.
Requirements
- Must be a current student in an accredited degree program or a recent graduate (within 12 months of the internship start date).
- Strong interest in news, politics, government, and current events.
- Excellent research skills and the ability to find unique angles on major news stories.
- Ability to own tasks from concept to completion.
- Must be able to work on-site in Washington, D.C.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule, including swing and weekend shifts.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous journalism or news reporting experience (e.g., college radio or local public radio internships).
- Experience with radio production, audio editing, or digital storytelling.
- A specific interest in public media.
