Medical Records Technician IV

Responsibilities

• Assist in the record completion cycle to ensure compliance with regulatory, licensing, and accrediting agencies by analyzing and validating deficiencies in electronic and hardcopy medical records.
• Coordinate release of information requests through direct patient or customer contact via telephone, mail, or online systems.
• Manage the expiration process, including scrutiny of autopsy papers, completion of death certificates as required by the State of Illinois, and updating documentation of all expiration activities.
• Maintain strict patient confidentiality in accordance with Medical Center, departmental, and legal standards.
• Prepare notification letters and reports for Medical Staff and Administration.
• Support physicians in record completion activities and process transcribed documents.

Requirements

• High School diploma or GED required.
• 3-5 years of health information management experience in an acute care facility (as a Medical Record Technician III or similar).
• Medical Terminology training required (or must be completed within 9 months of employment).
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, and Excel).
• Strong typing and key entry skills.
• Advanced knowledge of medical-legal rules and regulations governing confidentiality and the release of medical information.
• Ability to work independently and prioritize duties in a fast-paced environment with changing deadlines.

Preferred Qualifications

• Familiarity with licensing, accrediting, and regulatory requirements related to HIM record completion.
• Experience managing external release of information requests.
