Medical Records Technician

Responsibilities

• Create and maintain separate patient medical records using authorized recordkeeping processes
• Maintain patient records in an electronic health record system ensuring compliance with interoperability and reporting standards
• Process medical record requests from authorized health services and government representatives in accordance with privacy laws
• Protect patient confidentiality and PHI in compliance with HIPAA and other federal/state requirements
• Support timely retrieval, release, and secure transmission of medical information for continuity of care and audits
• Prepare and transfer confidential medical records or summaries for patient movement between facilities
• Maintain accuracy and organization of medical documentation and escalate discrepancies
• Support daily tracking of medical requests and appointments within facility information systems
• Maintain records in accordance with National Archives and Records Administration schedules
• Participate in required training related to privacy, records management, and emergency response

Requirements

• Experience maintaining medical or health records in a healthcare setting
• Experience working with an electronic health record system
• Knowledge of medical record confidentiality, retention, and release-of-information requirements
• Ability to protect PHI and sensitive information
• Proficiency with scanning equipment, printers, and computers
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
• High School Diploma or GED equivalent
• U.S. citizenship and five-year U.S. residency
• Ability to pass a medical examination and background investigation

Preferred Qualifications

• Verbal and written proficiency in Spanish
• Experience in a detention, correctional, or residential healthcare setting
