About the role
Responsibilities
- Perform difficult and complex investigations of suspicious deaths and criminal violence
- Supervise the work of City Medical Examiners I
- Order bodies to the Medical Examiner's Office and perform autopsies
- Conduct histological, toxicological, and serologic examinations
- Certify causes of sudden, unexpected, or violent deaths
- Prepare and file detailed investigation reports
- Testify before grand juries and in court
- Provide consultations in neuropathology or pediatric pathology
- Develop new policies, methods, and techniques for death investigation
- Consult with law enforcement and governmental agencies
Requirements
- Valid license to practice medicine in the State of New York
- Board certification in forensic pathology by the American Board of Pathology and evidence of having performed at least 200 autopsies (or one year of satisfactory performance at Assignment Level I)
- OR Board certification in a subspecialty of anatomic or clinical pathology applicable to forensic medicine
