Medical Examiner II

Responsibilities

• Perform difficult and complex investigations of suspicious deaths and criminal violence
• Supervise the work of City Medical Examiners I
• Order bodies to the Medical Examiner's Office and perform autopsies
• Conduct histological, toxicological, and serologic examinations
• Certify causes of sudden, unexpected, or violent deaths
• Prepare and file detailed investigation reports
• Testify before grand juries and in court
• Provide consultations in neuropathology or pediatric pathology
• Develop new policies, methods, and techniques for death investigation
• Consult with law enforcement and governmental agencies

Requirements

• Valid license to practice medicine in the State of New York
• Board certification in forensic pathology by the American Board of Pathology and evidence of having performed at least 200 autopsies (or one year of satisfactory performance at Assignment Level I)
• OR Board certification in a subspecialty of anatomic or clinical pathology applicable to forensic medicine
