About the role
Responsibilities
- Design mechanical prototypes in partnership with scientists and engineers using core engineering principles
- Create, update, and release mechanical CAD models and drawings to support builds and documentation
- Build, assemble, and modify prototype hardware, fixtures, and test apparatuses
- Construct, test, troubleshoot, and maintain lab equipment, components, and mechanical systems
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including optics, electronics, and manufacturing
- Document technical work and communicate results to stakeholders
Requirements
- 2-year (AAS) technical degree from an accredited institution
- Proficiency in creating and updating mechanical CAD models and drawings (SolidWorks or similar)
- Experience constructing, testing, and maintaining lab/prototype equipment and mechanical systems
- Strong problem-solving skills, including practical root-cause analysis
- Ability to plan and execute experimental work and maintain high data quality
- Strong safety mindset and adherence to safe work practices in lab and shop environments
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with metrology and measurement systems (e.g., optical metrology, laser alignment)
- Proficiency with hand tools, power tools, and additive manufacturing (filament and resin printers)
- Experience supporting opto-mechanical test setups and assembly benches
- Experience developing and troubleshooting photonic or optical component assembly processes
- Ability to contribute to technical reports and invention disclosures
