About the role

Responsibilities

  • Operate locomotives to transport them between shop locations, service tracks, and switching areas
  • Safely operate shop machinery and tools, including forklifts, backhoes, bobcats, and mobile cranes
  • Restock locomotives with essential materials such as drinking water, sand, and spare parts
  • Maintain cleanliness of locomotive interiors and exteriors, including floors and engine car bodies
  • Conduct air brake tests and inspect equipment and machinery for defects or unsafe conditions
  • Maintain effective communication with team members using hand radios and hand signals
  • Adhere to all safety regulations and wear required personal protective equipment (PPE)

Requirements

  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • Possession of a valid driver's license
  • Basic mechanical knowledge to solve mechanical problems
  • Proficiency in basic arithmetic (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and fractions)
  • Computer literacy and basic keyboarding skills
  • Ability to pass a Physical Ability Test (PAT)
  • Ability to lift and carry objects weighing up to 85 lbs
  • Ability to work around large equipment and at elevated heights

Preferred Qualifications

  • Completion of vocational courses in electronics or mechanics
  • Proficiency in the use of hand and power tools
  • Experience working outdoors in diverse weather conditions
  • Flexibility to work various shifts, including overtime, holidays, and weekends
