About the role
Responsibilities
- Operate locomotives to transport them between shop locations, service tracks, and switching areas
- Safely operate shop machinery and tools including forklifts, backhoes, bobcats, and mobile cranes
- Restock locomotives with essential materials such as drinking water, sand, and spare parts
- Maintain cleanliness of locomotive interiors and exteriors, including floors and engine car bodies
- Conduct air brake tests and inspect equipment and machinery for defects or unsafe conditions
- Communicate effectively with team members using hand radios and hand signals
- Adhere to all safety regulations and wear required personal protective equipment (PPE)
Requirements
- Must be 18 years of age or older
- Possession of a valid driver's license
- Proficiency in basic arithmetic (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and fractions)
- Basic mechanical knowledge to assist in solving mechanical problems
- Computer literacy and basic keyboarding skills
- Ability to pass a Physical Ability Test (PAT)
- Ability to lift and carry objects weighing up to 85 lbs
Preferred Qualifications
- Completion of vocational courses in electronics or mechanics
- Proficiency with both hand tools and power tools
- Experience working outdoors in diverse weather conditions
- Flexibility to work various shifts, including overtime, holidays, and weekends
- Comfort working in confined spaces or small environments
