About the role

Responsibilities

  • Carry out maintenance and repair of mechanical plant equipment within the workshop
  • Diagnose and repair complex faults in mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and engine systems
  • Lead the mobilisation of specialist plant equipment including ventilation and hyperbaric systems
  • Assist with crane rigging, repairs, and maintenance of the excavator fleet
  • Support the development of apprentices and junior fitters through mentoring
  • Perform inspections, preventative maintenance, basic welding, and flame cutting
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organised workshop environment
  • Accurately complete and submit records
  • Assist management with planning, stock control, and continuous improvement

Requirements

  • Time-served Plant Fitter or equivalent mechanical engineering qualification (NVQ Level 3 or City & Guilds)
  • Proven experience in plant maintenance and repair
  • Strong knowledge of hydraulic, mechanical, and basic electrical systems
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and schematics
  • Good understanding of UK H&S regulations and safe working practices
  • Excellent fault-finding and problem-solving skills
  • Strong communication and leadership abilities

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of the tunnelling industry and associated plant
  • Basic welding and cutting skills
  • LOLER/PUWER awareness
  • Forklift or plant operation tickets (e.g., CPCS, NPORS)
