Mechanical Engineer - Optomechanics

Responsibilities

• Design and optimize large optical mounts capable of maintaining stability under thermal loads, mechanical vibrations and environmental changes
• Apply principles of multi-degree-of-freedom kinematics to develop mounts that support precise and repeatable alignment
• Select appropriate materials, threads, springs and mechanical features to handle high loads and achieve fine adjustment sensitivity
• Integrate motorized or manual adjustment mechanisms into mounts, accounting for force transmission, backlash and precision
• Use CAD tools and mechanical modeling software to develop and iterate on designs in collaboration with physicists and systems engineers

Requirements

• Proven experience designing large, stable optical mounts or optomechanical assemblies for high-energy laser systems
• Strong understanding of mechanical kinematics, including angular and spatial degrees of freedom
• Proficiency in CAD and mechanical modeling (e.g. SolidWorks, Inventor or similar)
• Experience with thermal and vibrational analysis techniques
• Experience selecting and integrating adjustment mechanisms like threads, springs, flexures, or motors
• Ability to work in a multidisciplinary team with optical engineers and physicists

Preferred Qualifications

• Prior experience with ultra-short-pulse laser systems or high-stability optical platforms
• Familiarity with the mechanical implications of optical tolerances
• Background in the manufacturing or assembly of precision optical mounts or stages
• Ability to write documentation or specifications for mechanical interfaces
