About the role
Responsibilities
- Apply principles of solid mechanics and advanced computational finite-element methods to provide engineering solutions.
- Conduct predictions of complex, nonlinear material behavior from deformation to failure in multi-physics environments.
- Perform full-system scale finite element modeling of transient dynamic events such as crash, crush, and impact.
- Collaborate with computational and experimental mechanics specialists to drive technical innovation.
- Partner with multi-physics code development teams to enhance robust predictive capabilities.
- Work with internal customers to discuss simulation results and negotiate project deliverables.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline (Mechanical, Civil, Aerospace, or related field) or equivalent relevant experience.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q security clearance.
- Fundamental knowledge of finite element analysis (FEA), including element selection, contact, and material/constitutive model selection.
- Experience with nonlinear computational mechanics, including large to extreme deformation solid mechanics.
- Experience with high-performance scientific computing and scripting using Python, MATLAB, or similar languages.
Preferred Qualifications
- Graduate degree in Mechanical Engineering or a highly related field involving independent research.
- Experience with Sierra Solid Mechanics or other commercial large-scale finite element software.
- Experience with multi-physics computational mechanics (e.g., thermal, mechanical, shock).
- Experience in independent research and proposal development.
- Previous experience with mechanical engineering and product realization in the NNSA complex.
