Mechanical Design Engineer

Responsibilities

• Contribute to the mechanical design of precision hardware systems from concept through prototype
• Develop enclosure, packaging, and internal layout solutions for stability-critical environments
• Design mechanically robust solutions for precision assemblies and sensitive component integration
• Support thermal management and temperature stabilisation approaches
• Carry out mechanical and thermal analysis and simulation to identify technical risks
• Plan and execute validation activities for mechanical stability and thermal performance
• Work with photonics and systems architecture teams to translate requirements into hardware designs
• Engage with suppliers on fabrication methods and manufacturability
• Support prototype build activities including documentation, procurement, and assembly planning

Requirements

• Degree or apprenticeship-based qualification in mechanical engineering, physics, or related discipline
• 1–2 years of relevant post-degree or post-PhD experience in a demanding engineering environment
• Experience in the design, build, and validation of precision hardware or experimental systems
• Proficiency in CAD and production of engineering drawings
• Experience with mechanical and/or thermal modelling, analysis, or simulation
• Experience working with precision assemblies or tightly constrained mechanical systems
• Strong practical engineering skills covering design, build, test, and debugging
• Ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams
• Clear written and verbal communication skills

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in high-performance optical, photonic, cryogenic, vacuum, or scientific instrumentation
• Background in large-scale physics experiments, aerospace, or semiconductor tools
• Experience with optomechanical or fibre-based hardware packaging
• Experience developing thermally stable hardware or feedback-controlled systems
• Knowledge of design for manufacture and prototype iteration
• Familiarity with specialist fabrication and outsourced manufacturing
