About the role

Responsibilities

  • Diagnose malfunctions in diesel engines, air brake systems, fuel systems, and other locomotive mechanical systems
  • Repair, replace, or rebuild locomotives and diesel engine components
  • Inspect and service the diesel locomotive fleet in compliance with company, federal, and industry standards
  • Operate equipment including measuring instruments, precision machines, hand tools, and material handling equipment like forklifts and cranes
  • Read and interpret diagrams, schematics, graphs, and charts
  • Communicate technical information and job procedures verbally and in writing
  • Ensure compliance with all railroad rules, safety regulations, and Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) standards

Requirements

  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • Possess a valid driver's license
  • At least 4 years of mechanic experience (repairing trucks, ships, farm equipment, airplanes, trains, automobiles, or diesels) or a current journeyman's mechanical card
  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to successfully complete an English language assessment
  • Ability to pass a Physical Ability Test (PAT)
  • Willingness to work various shifts, including overtime, holidays, and weekends

Preferred Qualifications

  • ASE certification or license as a diesel mechanic
  • Completion of a formal auto/diesel engine training program (community college, trade school, or military)
  • Associate's degree in a mechanical-related field
  • Experience in diverse mechanical fields such as aviation, nuclear, or marine
  • Proficiency in welding or possession of a welding certificate
  • Experience working outdoors in various weather conditions and in confined spaces
