About the role
Responsibilities
- Diagnose malfunctions in diesel engines, air brake systems, fuel systems, and other locomotive mechanical systems
- Repair, replace, or rebuild locomotives and diesel engine components as needed
- Inspect and service the diesel locomotive fleet in compliance with company, federal, and industry standards
- Operate equipment including measuring instruments, precision machines, hand tools, and material handling equipment like forklifts and cranes
- Read and interpret technical information from diagrams, schematics, graphs, and charts
- Ensure compliance with all railroad rules, safety regulations, and Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) standards
Requirements
- Must be 18 years of age or older
- Possess a valid driver's license
- At least 4 years of mechanic experience (repairing trucks, ships, farm equipment, airplanes, trains, automobiles, or diesels) or a current journeyman's mechanical card
- Proficiency in conducting quick and accurate visual inspections at varying distances
- Ability to successfully complete an English language assessment
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
Preferred Qualifications
- ASE certification or license as a diesel mechanic
- Completion of a formal auto/diesel engine training program (community college, trade school, or military)
- Associate's degree in a mechanical-related field
- Experience in diverse mechanical fields such as aviation, nuclear, or marine
- Proficiency in welding or possession of a welding certificate
- Experience working outdoors in various weather conditions and in confined spaces
