About the role
Responsibilities
- Use various Materials Lab analytical equipment and testing techniques to support routine and complex customer requests
- Operate instruments including sectioning, grinding, polishing, optical microscopes, SEM, x-ray CT, and chemical analysis (EDS, FT-IR, XRF)
- Perform precise sectioning and sample preparation, specializing in difficult samples such as solder joints, PCBA, and small components
- Conduct visual examinations of PCBA to evaluate tin whiskers, dendritic growth, cracking, corrosion, and contamination
- Advise on investigative processes for failure evaluation, interpret results, and report findings to implement corrective actions
- Generate detailed laboratory testing reports and participate in customer meetings as required
- Support additional materials testing activities including surface protection, corrosion, tribology, and contamination
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science Engineering, or Metallurgical Engineering
- Hands-on laboratory testing experience
- Proficiency in laboratory testing skills including sample preparation, optical microscopy, SEM, image analysis, x-ray, and chemical analysis
- Practical experience with electronics sample preparation techniques, specifically regarding PCBA
- Strong technical writing and presentation skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledge of quality systems and familiarity with Lab Information Management Systems (LIMS)
- Familiarity with electronic materials testing standards (IPC) and general standards (ASTM, ISO)
- Practical experience with electronics manufacturing processes and materials
- Knowledge of metal/polymer properties, coatings, and processing
- Familiarity with automotive products and hand tools
