About the role

Responsibilities

  • Perform testing for materials used in space nuclear reactors for long-duration deep space missions
  • Conduct tests, process post-test data, and perform analyses
  • Generate peer-reviewed white papers on test results for AIAA and/or JANNAF Conferences
  • Perform systems-level analysis to validate test readiness
  • Design and implement laboratory-scale plumbing for high and low-pressure gaseous systems
  • Program microprocessor devices using Arduino or Raspberry Pi
  • Program and integrate custom laboratory devices using LabVIEW and MATLAB
  • Review analysis and test results associated with materials development for nuclear propulsion designs

Requirements

  • US Citizenship and a valid STAR ID
  • Degree in Aerospace, Mechanical, or Nuclear engineering (or related field)
  • Extensive professional experience based on education level (Ph.D. with 14+ years, MS with 18+ years, or BS with 20-25+ years)
  • Hands-on experience with space propulsion research and development
  • Proficiency with data acquisition instruments (e.g., National Instruments, Omega, Fluke, or Eaton)
  • Experience with laboratory pressure systems, including tubing, gauges, valves, and fittings
  • Knowledge of cryogens, fuels, and nuclear reactor fuel types
  • Ability to attain a security clearance through the Department of Defense if required

Preferred Qualifications

  • Degree from an ABET-accredited university
  • Cursory electronics background, such as circuit building or spacecraft avionics
  • Knowledge of small pressure-fed thrusters using green propellants
  • Experience with vacuum chambers and large volume air tanks
