Manager (Technical Governance Team)

About the Company

The Machine Intelligence Research Institute (MIRI) is a nonprofit based in Berkeley, California, focused on reducing existential risks from the transition to smarter-than-human AI. While historically focused on technical alignment research, MIRI has shifted focus towards communication and AI governance.

Responsibilities

• Project management: track existing projects, motivate work toward deadlines, and identify blockers
• People management: lead hiring rounds, conduct performance reviews, and optimize workflows
• Pre-publication review: ensure team outputs meet quality bars and align with MIRI goals
• Internal stakeholder management: interface with the rest of MIRI and advocate for team interests
• External stakeholder management: build relationships with policymakers and AI company employees
• Research contributions: potential to contribute to object-level research work

Requirements

• Alignment with MIRI's values and AI safety goals
• Background in AI Safety or related technical governance areas
• Experience or familiarity in compute governance, AI policy, or AI safety research
• Strong agency and ability to work independently
• High level of conscientiousness and organizational skills
• Ability to learn quickly in underspecified environments
• Excellent internal and external communication skills

Preferred Qualifications

• Research or engineering experience focused on frontier AI models or the AI tech stack
• Experience with model evaluations, benchmarking AI hardware, or scaling law experiments
